Verstappen asserts that he would have won the 2024 title with either McLaren or Ferrari.

Verstappen reckons he would have sealed the drivers’ championship “even earlier” as a McLaren driver

Max Verstappen believes he would have won the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship if he had been driving for McLaren or Ferrari instead of Red Bull.

Having secured his fourth consecutive F1 title with two races to spare at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Verstappen sealed the deal with a controlled fifth-place finish, knocking his closest competitor, Lando Norris, out of contention.

While Verstappen started the season with a dominant Red Bull RB20, McLaren made a significant leap forward in May, and Ferrari, along with Mercedes, also had moments at the front. Despite not having the fastest car for about 70% of the season, Verstappen is confident he would have clinched the title in his rivals’ cars as well.

When asked if he could have won with McLaren, Verstappen replied, “Yes, even earlier, so I would have been further ahead. With Ferrari, pretty much the same, I think. Mercedes, no. I think that would have been trickier.”

Verstappen also shared his thoughts on confronting McLaren CEO Zak Brown after his comments that Verstappen could only win in the dominant Red Bull. “Comments like that motivate me; when people criticize or believe I can only win in the best car, I’ll prove them wrong,” he said.

“If I don’t get [that credit] now, then I don’t know what I to do.”

Brown’s comments were made right after Norris’ maiden win in May’s Miami Grand Prix, when Verstappen had won four of the first six races and the depth of the RB20’s flaws had yet to fully emerge over time.

Brown’s claims that six or seven drivers could win the title in that Red Bull also looked nowhere near as outlandish then as they would have done today.

When asked whether with the benefit of hindsight anyone else could have won the 2024 title in the Red Bull, Verstappen quipped: “Well, we are in the right place for that question here in Vegas, because you can bet on that!

“All I can say is, I wish them the best of luck with that…”
