A series of social media posts by the New Hampshire Libertarian Party advocating for the assassination of Vice President Kamala Harris and violence against politicians have attracted attention from state and federal law enforcement and have been widely condemned by politicians from various parties.

One post, shared on X shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday, stated: “Anyone who murders Kamala Harris would be an American hero.” Subsequent posts that morning included messages such as, “The purpose of the Second Amendment is to shoot and kill tyrannical politicians,” and, “Encouraging the shooting of politicians is protected under the First Amendment. It’s part of what makes this country great.”

Some of the posts have since been removed, but they have caught the attention of both state and federal law enforcement agencies.

A U.S. Secret Service spokesperson confirmed via email that the agency is aware of the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire’s social media posts. While the spokesperson did not provide specific comments on the content of the posts, they stated: “The Secret Service investigates all threats related to our protectees.”

Both the New Hampshire Department of Safety, which includes the state police, and the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office have indicated that they are coordinating with federal law enforcement partners regarding the posts.

The New Hampshire Libertarian Party did not respond to requests for comment. The party later deleted the initial post, stating they did not want to violate the terms of use on X, formerly Twitter, and lamenting the difficulty of free speech on the platform: “It’s a shame that even on a ‘free speech’ website libertarians cannot speak freely. Libertarians are truly the most oppressed minority.”

Criticism of the posts came from both state Democratic and Republican leaders. State Republican Chairman Chris Ager condemned them “in the strongest possible terms. There is no room for this type of dialogue. PERIOD.” Raymond Buckley, chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, described the Libertarian Party’s endorsement of violence against Harris as “disgusting, dangerous, and wrong.”

Following the original post, the New Hampshire Libertarian Party’s X account engaged in a heated exchange with critics, including Chase Oliver, the Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee, and used a homophobic slur in the process.

On Monday morning, the state Libertarian Party released what it described as an “official statement on political assassinations.”

The statement partially read: “We would never support the assassination of a tyrannical President, as that is illegal. We were simply recognizing how some members might respond to such a situation.”
