Michael Schumacher was previously a titan of motorsports, but a life-altering ski accident altered his life drastically. Now, his family is devotedly working to safeguard him, just as he used to support them.
In the 11 years since the Formula One champion suffered a severe brain injury, his family has united to create a strong, protective barrier around the iconic racing driver.
It is believed that this protective stance regarding Michael’s health has led to tensions within the family, with his devoted wife, Corinna Schumacher, being very selective about who is permitted to visit her husband.
Nonetheless, it seems the Schumachers have eased their defenses somewhat, as Michael has reportedly made his first ‘public appearance’ since 2013.
According to the Majorcan news outlet Ultima Hora, the 55-year-old father of two attended his daughter Gina’s wedding over the weekend. The 27-year-old equestrian star, who has followed in her father’s athletic footsteps, reportedly married her longtime partner, Iain Bethke, at the family’s villa in Puerto De Andratx, Mallorca. The family has not yet commented on these reports.
This significant event marks the first time Michael has been seen in public since his tragic accident in 2013 and may indicate that Corinna is becoming more flexible in her approach. However, strict rules remain in place, as wedding guests were reportedly instructed to leave their phones at the door to ensure Michael’s privacy, with the Schumachers remaining fiercely protective of him.
In 2013, the Schumachers’ lives were forever altered when Michael suffered a skiing accident in the French Alps, hitting his head on a rock. Although his helmet absorbed most of the impact, the brain injury he sustained was still serious. After undergoing two life-saving surgeries, the sports icon spent several months in a medically induced coma. From the onset of this ordeal, Michael’s family worked diligently to keep details about his condition private, although they did provide some updates.
In the immediate aftermath, it was announced that Michael was critically injured and fighting for his life. Another update was not released until April 2014, when the family reported that he had displayed “moments of consciousness and awakening.” By the following summer, it was confirmed that Michael had emerged from the coma and had been transferred to a rehabilitation facility.
By September 2014, Michael had returned to his family home on Lake Geneva, where he received round-the-clock care from Corinna and a team of medical professionals. Committed to preserving her husband’s dignity, Corinna allowed only a small group of trusted friends and family to visit him, following strict protocols. It is also understood that only a few individuals are aware of the specifics regarding Michael’s condition and care, which remain largely a mystery.
In late 2014, fans got a rare glimpse into Michael’s situation when close friend and fellow former racing driver Philippe Streiff disclosed that Michael was paralyzed and required a wheelchair. Philippe, who also uses a wheelchair due to a racing accident, stated, “He is getting better, but everything is relative. It’s very difficult. He can’t speak. Like me, he is in a wheelchair and paralyzed. He has memory and speech problems.”
Meanwhile, former Ferrari boss Jean Todt praised Corinna’s incredible resolve in caring for her beloved husband, noting that while his miraculous survival came with “consequences,” she has handled the situation admirably. He shared with Bild: “I’ve spent a lot of time with Corinna since Michael’s serious skiing accident on December 29, 2013. She is a remarkable woman and leads the family. She hadn’t anticipated this; it happened suddenly, and she had no choice. But she manages it very well. I trust her, and she trusts me. Thanks to the efforts of his doctors and Corinna’s determination for him to survive, he is alive—but with consequences.”
In September 2020, it was reported that Michael had been spending more time in Majorca, coinciding with Gina’s wedding. Further troubling details about his condition surfaced, as Elisabetta Gregoraci, the ex-wife of former F1 team principal Flavio Briatore, informed the Spanish press: “Michael doesn’t speak; he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him, and I know who they are.” In additional remarks on the Italian version of Big Brother, Elisabetta revealed, “They moved to Spain, and his wife has set up a hospital in that house.”
In the 2021 Netflix documentary SCHUMACHER, Corinna highlighted the significance of safeguarding her husband’s privacy, saying, “We’re trying to carry on as a family, just as Michael liked and still does. We are moving forward with our lives. It’s crucial to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting him.”
Unfortunately, this commitment was challenged over the summer when news broke that the family was being blackmailed by a father and son who threatened to release sensitive images of the F1 icon following his accident, attempting to extort millions from the Schumachers. Despite the painful challenges they have faced, the family has remained strong, sharing heartfelt tributes to Michael and cherishing joyful memories. In January, Michael’s children, Mick and Gina, took to social media to celebrate their father’s birthday with nostalgic childhood photos. Mick posted, “Happy birthday to the best dad ever. Love you,” while Gina captioned her throwback photo, “Happy Birthday Papa! Throwback to one of many of our adventures.”
Sadly, despite this courageous front, some family relationships have reportedly become strained. In November of last year, Michael’s younger brother Ralf expressed his sorrow over losing contact with Corinna and Michael following the tragic accident.
In an interview with German magazine Bunte, Ralf, who also had a successful racing career, said, “When I see his children Gina-Maria and Mick, it warms my heart. If anyone in the family seeks my advice, I’m here for them. They are charting their own course.” He added, “I miss the Michael of the past. Life can be unfair at times. Michael was very fortunate throughout his life, but then came this tragic accident. He wasn’t just my brother; in our childhood, he was also my coach and mentor. He taught me everything I know about kart racing.”
Despite their previous estrangement, Ralf attended his niece’s wedding. In July, he publicly came out as gay, nearly a decade after his 2015 divorce from former Playboy model Cora.
