SACRAMENTO – Discovery Park in Sacramento hosted a vibrant celebration all weekend long, attracting rock and metal fans from around the globe for the four-day Aftershock festival.
According to Mike Testa, President and CEO of Visit Sacramento, 70% of the attendees were from outside the area, with approximately 40,000 people attending each day.
Many attendees parked at Cal Expo and took advantage of the shuttle service to reach the concert, while others opted for ride-sharing services.
“It’s only been about $12, which isn’t too bad,” said Addison Phillips, who shared an Uber ride with friends from El Dorado Hills. “I thought it would be over $20.”
The bike valet area was bustling, providing a convenient option for locals to avoid potential traffic issues by cycling or scootering to the event.
“My bike hasn’t been stolen either, which has been great,” said Josh Plotner, who rode his bike to Aftershock.
Pedi-cabs proved to be a popular means of transportation to the festival from nearby hotels.
“Nobody wants to ride with a 65-year-old grandmother, but Santa Claus is the ultimate superhero and it brings joy to everyone,” remarked Elizabeth Jade Wong Fontana, a driver for Pacific Pedi Cabs.
Dressed as Santa Claus, she traveled from Stockton to offer rides in her Christmas-themed cab. She has been doing this for the past 12 years and has become a crowd favorite.
“I hope to make around $1,200 to $1,500 today, and I’m almost there,” said Wong Fontana.
She noted that other Pedi cab drivers can earn between $2,000 to $3,000 in a day.
“It feels more like fall than summer, which I think has contributed to that,” said Testa. “We’ve seen a significant number of walk-up ticket sales this year.”
Testa mentioned that they collaborated with Caltrans to modify its projects to prevent major traffic issues because the only jam anyone wanted this weekend was with the music.
Although Caltrans closed the connector between northbound Highway 99 and westbound Highway 50, rerouting drivers, the slight congestion didn’t deter people from attending.
Next weekend will see the second round with the Golden Sky Country Music Festival, followed by Iron Man the weekend after.
Testa noted that these three weekends collectively generate around $60 million for Sacramento.
