Donald Trump criticizes ABC News and raises doubts about his participation in the September 10 debate.

On Sunday, former President Donald Trump questioned his participation in the first presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris. In a post on Truth Social, Trump asked, “Why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?” He criticized Jonathan Karl’s interview with Tom Cotton on ABC’s “This Week” and the show’s panel of commentators.

ABC News is scheduled to host the debate on September 10, which is currently the only debate both nominees have agreed to before the November Election Day. This agreement followed considerable negotiation, with Trump advocating for a debate on September 4 hosted by Fox News, which the vice president’s campaign has not accepted.

Trump directed some of his criticism towards Donna Brazile, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee, who faced scrutiny in 2016 after Wikileaks published emails revealing she had shared town hall topics with Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The former president also suggested that Harris’ close associate “leads” ABC, apparently referring to Dana Walden.

Walden, a Disney executive, has been a long-time friend of Harris. However, ABC News has stated that Walden’s role is limited to the network’s corporate and financial areas.

On Monday, Jason Miller, a senior aide to the Trump campaign, stated that disagreements between the Democratic and Republican teams persist regarding the debate rules, including issues related to seating arrangements, notes, and other factors.

In response, the Harris campaign refuted Miller’s assertions. Brian Fallon, the senior communications adviser for the Harris campaign, declared that they believe “both candidates’ mics should remain live throughout the entire broadcast,” highlighting concerns about Trump’s tendency to interrupt his debate opponents.

Are there additional debates planned apart from the one on September 10?

Harris’ team has agreed to a second debate, but the details regarding its timing and location remain uncertain. Earlier this month, the Harris-Walz campaign stated, “The debate about debates is settled. Donald Trump’s campaign has accepted our proposal for three debates—two presidential and one vice presidential.”

The campaign stated, “If Donald Trump attends the debate with Vice President Harris on September 10, then Governor Walz will face JD Vance on October 1. The American people will also have another chance to watch Vice President Harris and Donald Trump debate again in October.”

Trump’s and Harris’ running mates—Senator JD Vance of Ohio and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz—have both agreed to participate in a debate on October 1, which will be hosted by CBS News.
